This Caribbean Island Has Just Implemented A New Tourism Fee
Entering Aruba will now set you back an additional $20 due to a new “Sustainability Fee” imposed on all travelers visiting the island by air. Visitors must also continue paying the old $3 environmental tax.
The new entry fee has a cost of $20 and must be paid before arrival. Money collected would be used to upgrade some key infrastructure and facilities, including the country’s sewage water treatment plants, said Aruba Tourism Authority.
“Starting July 1st, 2024, Aruba will implement a $20 Sustainability Fee for visitors arriving by air to the island. This fee will support a number of projects aimed at enhancing and improving sustainability efforts on the island,” says the official website.
Those arriving in Aruba without payment proof won’t get clearance to enter the island.
For some reason the administration has failed to explain, visitors arriving via cruise vessels are exempt from paying this tax. Other travelers who don’t need to pay the new fee include residents and some types of students.
How and When to Pay the New Aruba’s Tax
Keep in mind that this tax cannot be paid upon arrival. Make sure to complete this payment up to seven days before landing in Aruba.
To pay the fee, you need to fill out the Embarkation & Disembarkation (ED) Card online.
Most credit cards like Visa, Mastercard, and American Express, as well as Apple Pay, are accepted.
For your comfort, the site offers its services in English, Dutch and Spanish.
If you visit this destination multiple times a year, don’t worry. The first payment is valid for 365 days.
Other European Destinations Impossing Tourist Taxes
Aruba is not the only destination charging travelers extra money to allow them to visit. Other European cities and countries have taken the same path in 2024. Some of them include:
Amsterdam: This popular city has increased its city tourist tax for overnight visitors and cruise passengers.Paris: the City of Love raised taxes on hotels and other accommodations.Barcelona: Europe’s second most-visited city has increased its tourist tax to up to €50 per week’s stay, depending on your accommodation type.Venice: This city is charging day-trippers $5.50.Galapagos Islands (Ecuador): This country will start charging $200 per adult and $100 per child from August 1.Iceland: The tourist tax has not been set yet but it’s been discussed. The country wants to finance its climate and sustainability goals.Lauterbrunnen: This Swiss town is also considering starting to charge tourists to enter its territory.
