This Caribbean Destination Keeps Breaking Tourism Records And It’s Not Cancun

Known for its expansive coral reefs and stunning turquoise waters, this Dutch Caribbean island is seeing a ”remarkable” number of arrivals, said the Curacao Tourist Board.

Being the Caribbean, a region where northern hemisphere travelers come to hide from the cold winter months, summer is not traditionally the busiest season.

However, last month, 50,123 people decided to book their tickets to Curacao, 13 percent more when compared to the same month last year.

“Normally, the months of May and June used to show an average of 30,000 stayover arrivals, in historical years. Since last year, the tourism board has seen an increase in arrivals, tipping above 40,000 stayover arrivals for mentioned months. In the present year, the bar is set at 50,000 stayover arrivals, showing a great demand in tourists choosing Curaçao as a vacation destination,” said the Tourism Board.

Local media outlets call it the “Sandals Effect,” which would be caused due to the opening of several signature resorts across the island in the last couple of years.

According to official data, Americans have become the largest source market for the island. It seems that the opening of multiple all-inclusives has finally won the hearts of US citizens.

On the other side, Cancun International Airport has reported a reduction in arrivals for the second month in a row, according to the Caribbean Journal. 

A report from ASUR shows that visitors have decreased by 2.4 percent so far this year compared to the same period in 2023.

Factors contributing to this slowdown may include the great reception of the new Tulum airport and an increase in criminal activity in the city.

Other Reasons Behind Curacao’s Success

There are two other key factors, travelers are weighing when booking their Caribbean dream destinations: Hurricanes and sargassum.

No Deadly Hurricanes

Tropical Storm Risk (TSR) and other meteorological agencies have forecasted hurricane season 2024 to be one of the strongest in over 20 years. 

In theory, the storm season in Curacao runs from Jun. 1 to Nov. 30. But, due to its blessed location on the south side of the Lesser Antilles, it’s actually considered outside the so-called Hurricane Belt.

Of course, during these months strong winds may be present. But those never pose any real threat.

No Smelly Sargassum

Unlike other Caribbean destinations that have been fighting sargassum for over 10 years now, Curacao has not been too affected by that phenomenon, at least, not in an amount that could deter visitors from coming.  

Other Caribbean Islands Breaking Arrival Records

With a combined total of 33.2 million travelers in 2023, the Caribbean is seeing one of its best years in history, tourism-wise. This figure represents an increase of 14.3 percent in arrivals compared to last year, according to data revealed at the annual Caribbean Travel Marketplace recently held in Jamaica.

Some of the best-performing Caribbean islands include the US Virgin IslandsJamaica, Saint Lucia, Turks & Caicos and the Dominican Republic
