What to Do in Tahoe in Summer: 7 Family Friendly Activities in Lake Tahoe

Traveling is fun for anybody but can also be overwhelming when there are so many things to do. In this I’m talking about seven of the best things to do while traveling in Lake Tahoe with your family.

Have you been itching to plan a great lake vacation? If so, why not visit the most popular summer lake in the United States?

That’s right, Lake Tahoe is the country’s most frequently visited summer lake, and with good reason. There are tons of activities available for people of all ages.

Read on learn about seven of the most fun things to do in Lake Tahoe.

1. Visit Emerald Bay State Park

Emerald Bay State Park is surrounded by lush forests and glacier-carved granite, making it one of the most beautiful parts of Lake Tahoe.

The waters in the bay are also a lovely blue-green color thanks to the water that is slightly shallower than the rest of the lake.

The Emerald Bay shoreline is full of hiking trails that lead to amazing, panoramic views of the bay. Two of the most popular hikes are the Cascade Falls Trail and the Bayview Trail.

Inspiration Point, which is located 600 feet above the lake, offers a birds-eye view of Emerald Bay.

The shores of Emerald Bay also feature the Vikingsholm Castle. This landmark features 38-rooms and is open for public tours from late May to Labor Day.

2. Attend an Event at the Tallac Historic Site

The Tallac Historic Site features three amazing historic estates: the Pope House, the Valhalla Estate, and Baldwin Estate.

If you’re taking a summer trip to Lake Tahoe, these houses must be included on your to-do- list. During the summer, the entire Tallac Historic Site is open for daily tours.

Each estate on the property offers its own unique attractions. For example, the Pope House hosts a two-day Great Gatsby Festival every August. The Valhalla Estate hosts the Art, Music & Theater Festival each year, and the Baldwin Estate features a historical museum that is suitable for visitors of all ages.

3. Go to Kings Beach

If you’re looking to soak up some sun and relax by the water, Kings Beach is the place to go.

Kings Beach is a large, sandy beach that is perfect for swimming, boating, and sunbathing.

The recreation area features public restrooms, barbecue pits, a playground, a basketball court, and picnic tables, so your family will be well-fed and entertained all day long.

Fishing is allowed at Kings Beach, but you must have a license.

During your day at the beach, you and your family can also walk to nearby shops and restaurants and check out the wares offered by local street vendors.

4. Take a Tour of the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion

If historic sites are your or your family’s jam, the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion is a must.

Located in the Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park, this mansion was originally owned by Isaias W. Hellman, a wealthy California financier.

The mansion features beautiful decor and is a popular wedding venue. It’s open for public tours between late May and the end of September.

In addition to touring the mansion, your family can also check out the nearby Nature Center. This attraction offers a variety of exhibits about everything from birds and wildflowers to trees and lake ecology.

5. Hike the Eagle Rock Hiking Trail

For a simple, family-friendly hike, you’ll have to visit the Eagle Rock Hiking Trail.

This simple hike is located on the west shore of Lake Tahoe and is located about four miles from Tahoe City.

Eagle Rock is a volcanic outcrop located just a few hundred feet above the lake.

The whole hike can be completed in about twenty minutes and is only about a half-mile long. It may be easy, but the views from the top are absolutely worth it.

You may fall so in love with the area that you want to view here and check out the local real estate listings!

6. Ride the Aerial Tram to High Camp

If you want stunning valley views, take the aerial tram from the Squaw Valley floor to High Camp, which is located 2,000 feet above.

From High Camp, you’ll get to see amazing views of the mountains and the lake. You’ll also be able to swim in a beautiful pool, play games outdoors, or take advantage of one of the many hiking trails. You can also pay a visit to the Olympic Museum if you’re looking for an indoor activity.

Keep in mind that it does get quite windy up at high camp, so you may want to pack an extra layer just in case.

7. Ride Bikes Along the Truckee River

Finally, if you want to stay active but want to take a break from hiking, consider hitting up the miles of bike trails located on Highway 89 along the Truckee River.

At Squaw Valley Rd. and Highway 89, you’ll find a great bike rental shop with bikes for both adults and children. You can also rent bike trailers if you have children who can’t yet ride a bike.
