This was my first time sailing and I couldn't think of a better place to do it than off the coast of Turkey. Working on one of these ships would be one of the most unique jobs in the world. The Bella Mare is a Turkish Gulet and inside the ship there is 6 bedrooms for the guests plus space for 8 crew members. During the peak season, renting this ship costs 48,000 USD per week. I quickly learned that in sailing, the quality of the crew is more important than the quality of the ship. Nothing would be completed without the crew because they make it possible to wake up every day in different exotic locations.

During our time at sea, I gained a whole new respect for the people who make their living here. The deckhands work on the outside of the ship while the stewards and stewardesses keep everything in line on the inside and of course, the captain is the glue that holds them all together. In most crew members you’ll find a spirit of adventure and an unquestionable love of the sea. They spend lengthy periods on the ocean and while at sea they may be on duty for long hours for several days at a time. The lifestyle means a lot of time away from family and loved ones. Working through holidays is standard and personal freedom is part of the price. This job isn’t easy but with hat being said, that the rewards are substantial. Traveling to new places, meeting new people, cultures and making friends the world over…
