Hurricane Beryl Leaves 7 Dead In Grenada And Heads Towards Jamaica And Cancun

The powerful hurricane Beryl has wreaked havoc in Grenada, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and northern Venezuela, killing at least 7 people in its wake. Many others are currently missing.

So far today, Grenada officials have reported that at least 98 percent of the island buildings were damaged or completely destroyed, affecting over 6,000 residents.

The destruction is “unimaginable,” lamented Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell.

“We’ll have to rebuild from the ground up,” Mitchell told reporters after witnessing the destruction in Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

On Wednesday (today), Beryl is set to pass near or over Jamaica as a “major hurricane,” Category 4. Local authorities have imposed a curfew and issued a disaster warning to flood-prone areas. Evacuation should start at once.

“I am encouraging all Jamaicans to take the hurricane as a serious threat,” said Prime Minister Andrew Holness Tuesday.

“You want to be in a safe place where you can ride out the storm by nightfall (Tuesday). Be prepared to stay in that location through Wednesday,” he remarked.

On Thursday, the hurricane will barrel toward the Cayman Islands and into Cancun and the rest of the Yucatan peninsula on Friday, according to observations revealed by the National Hurricane Center.

Cruise lines have also been affected.

Carnival Cruise Line had to change the trajectories of Carnival Horizon and Carnival Liberty which were scheduled to make port in the Cayman Islands and Cozumel Mexico this week.

The Norwegian Cruise Line also had to reroute their vessels Norwegian Jade and Norwegian Breakaway which were supposed to dock in Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Belize and Mexico.

Several U.S. Embassies Have Issued Hurricane Warnings For Caribbean Countries

The U.S. government has issued an alert for Americans residing or vacationing in Jamaica and the Caiman Islands.

Beryl has reached Category 5 and is expected to reach Jamaica on Wednesday with maximum sustained “dangerous” winds of 160 miles per hour.

Massive floodings, landslides, rainfall and power outages as well as airport and road closures are expected during the rest of the day.

U.S. citizens located near the coasts should look for shelter at once and avoid coming to the U.S. Embassy or Consular Agency for protection.

The Dominican Republic Embassy ALERT – July 2

The Southern part of the Dominican Republic is forecast to be impacted by Hurricane Beryl today, Wednesday.

Affected areas will potentially include “the south coast of the Dominican Republic from Punta Palenque (West of Santo Domingo, East of Baní) westward to the border with Haiti.” The provinces of Pedernales and Barahona were also put under red alert.

Overall, avoid walking, swimming or driving through flooding. In case your vehicle gets trapped in a flooding, seek refuge on the roof. Call 911 if you need assistance.

Other general recommendations include making yourself informed about hurricane-proof shelters near you, and monitoring the latest news provided by the National Hurricane Center at www.nhc.noaa.gov.
