Brazil To Soon Reimpose Visa Requirements On U.S., Canadian, And Australian Travelers

As of October 1, visitors from the United States, Canada and Australia will again need a visa.

The reintroduction of the reciprocity policy by the new government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, which took office in early 2023 is the cause.

Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s former president, abolished the reciprocity policy in 2019 and exempted these three countries from visa requirements to boost inbound international tourism.

The current government sees no reason to make it easier for these citizens to travel to the popular South American country, as these countries still require visas from Brazilian nationals.

While it was disclosed several months ago that the Brazilian government intends to reverse its pre-pandemic decision to grant visa-free status to the U.S., Canada, and Australia, the foreign ministry has now provided new information concerning these upcoming alterations in policy.

Beginning on October 1, travelers with U.S. passports who want to visit Brazil will need to apply for a Visit Visa, or “Vistos de Visita” (VIVIS)“The modality of the electronic visa, which was in force before the unilateral exemption, will be adopted,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

Then, Americans will be able to apply for visas online. The digital visa would allow Americans to travel to Brazil for up to 90 days for a variety of legal purposes, including tourism, business travel, transportation, study, volunteer work, and creative or sports activities.

A passport valid for the duration of the proposed trip to Brazil, proof of residency for non-U.S. citizens, a letter describing the purpose of the trip, payment of visa processing fees ($160 for U.S. citizens), proof of an exit ticket within 90 days of entry, a complete itinerary with hotel reservations or host invitations, and finally, proof of sufficient financial stability to support the visitor during their visit are all requirements for obtaining a visa.

American citizens should also be aware that, under international travel regulations, their passport must have at least two open pages in order for them to enter Brazil. This is in addition to obtaining a valid visa.
