7 Things to Think About Before Moving to LA

If you’re thinking about moving to Los Angeles, there’s a lot you need to think about. The city is changing rapidly, and it’s not always for the better. The good news is that even as it changes, it’s still an exciting place to live and work for many people. Here are some things to think about before you pack your bags and head out west.

1. The traffic really is that bad

If you’re worried about traffic, you probably have a valid reason. It’s really that bad. Rush hour sucks, but it’s not just a morning and evening thing; traffic can be bad at any time of day, not just at peak hours.

Even if you’re not driving during rush hour, there’s still plenty of other reasons for panic when thinking about LA traffic. Weekends are typically slow due to beachgoers heading in and out of town, summer is brutal because everyone wants to escape from their rat-race lives into suburbia, and the list goes on.

If you decide you can’t be without a car, you’ll want to consider something like a monthly parking company so you can find a place to park it during the day when you’re at work. Public transport isn’t for everyone, so monthly parking rentals are a great option!

2. There are a ton of great restaurants

If you love food, LA is the place to be. There are countless great restaurants in Los Angeles—and they’re everywhere. You’ll find awesome hole-in-the-wall places; fancy restaurants with Michelin stars; and everything in between. Some of them are old school, while others are super modern or hipster cool. No matter what kind of food you like, there’s something for everyone!

It’s not all about fancy sit-down dinners either: LA has an amazing selection of street carts that serve up everything from tacos and burritos to bagels and burgers, as well as a ton of trucks selling Korean BBQ tacos (my personal favorite) or fresh fruit smoothies (for those who aren’t looking for something heavy).

For those who prefer to cook their own meals or socialize over dinner parties rather than fast-casual restaurants, there are dozens of farmers markets offering fresh produce and specialty foods (including some excellent vegan options). And then there’s also an abundance of farm-to-table restaurants that serve as both showcases for local growers as well as destinations in themselves—many of them on rooftops where you can take in amazing views while enjoying your meal!

3. Hollywood is the least interesting part of the city

If you’re looking to live in Hollywood, it’s best to think of yourself as an honorary Angeleno. Yes, the iconic sign is there and yes you might be able to see it from your bedroom window. But that doesn’t mean that living in Hollywood is all there is to Los Angeles.

The Sunset Strip has some great bars and restaurants, but if you want to go out at night I’d recommend checking out other neighborhoods like Downtown or Silver Lake. If hiking is more your thing then head over to Runyon Canyon Park – it has great views of both Downtown LA and Hollywood Hills. And if you’re into surfing, check out Malibu!

4. The weather is amazing

When you’re moving to a new city, the weather is one of the first things you think about. And for good reason! The weather in Los Angeles is incredible—you’ll never want to leave when you have blue skies, ocean breezes, and palm trees galore.

You don’t have to deal with snow, rain, or even cold—and it’s a great place to live if you’re into outdoor activities like hiking and biking.

But it’s also important to consider the flip side of this benefit: LA has almost no seasons (except for the occasional earthquake). If you’re used to changing seasons and weather patterns, LA might not be for you.

5. The cost of living is higher than many other cities in the US

Moving to LA is expensive—and not just in terms of the cost of your new home.

If you’re moving from out of state, you’ll need to pay for the travel expenses of yourself and your family members, as well as any movers who help you move. And if you’re moving from another city within California, there’s a good chance that the cost of living will be higher than where you came from.

If you’re planning on moving to LA, make sure you have enough money to cover your expenses while you’re looking for work if you don’t already have a job lined up.

6. Your skills will be needed, so bring them to town

If you’re thinking about moving to Los Angeles, you should know that your skills are going to be needed here. I’m not just talking about the obvious stuff like being a good actor or writer—I mean the more specialized skills that are less common in other parts of the country.

For example, if you’re an expert at making sausage or curing olives, you’ll probably find a job quickly here. And if you have experience working with animals—whether it’s horses, dogs, or even llamas—you can make some money while doing something fun!

7. It’s worth it!

All in all, the pros of moving to Los Angeles outweigh the cons. The city has so much to offer and there are more than enough things to do that you can find something fun on any given day. If you’re looking for a place where you can live your best life, LA is definitely worth a look – you won’t regret it despite some of the drawbacks above.

Wrapping Up

As we’ve covered, moving to Los Angeles has lots of upsides. There are lots of things to see and do and it’s a great place to work if you’re in the right field. Also, with so many people coming in every day, there’s plenty of opportunity to meet new people and make friends! So if your skills are needed in this city—and they probably are—then there’s no reason why you shouldn’t take advantage of what LA has to offer.
